Understanding Purpose

The purpose in a man’s heart is like deep water,

but a man of understanding will draw it out.

Proverbs 20:5

We have talked about purpose so often on this blog but it is always good to talk about it. Seriously purpose is one of those things that touches everyone. It is part of the questions so many people have. What is my path? What is my purpose? What am I supposed to do with my life?

There is an entire genre of movie about self-discovery and this SpIrItUaL jOuRnEy people need to take to ‘find themselves’ and figure out their ‘path’. People sell out these shows and they probably cry and then they start to wonder if they know themselves either. Everyone wants to know if they have a specific purpose and they want to know what to do with their lives.

In a world that teaches people life has no meaning, we try to find something or someone to enrich life. There are these lists in psychology of different things people do to give themselves a feeling of meaning, but God is not just some concept. He’s not just a Comforter. He is more.

Begging the question, what purpose does God have for my life? And what does my understanding have to do with divine objective?

You need understanding because purpose is not one dimensional. It is multi-faceted. It is not just one path, straight and true, there are curves and complications because the rest of the world can shape where the bend in the path happens. Our purpose is defined by God yes and yet we can have more than one “grand” purpose.

There seems to be a common assumption amongst men of every person having one purpose. And yet, this cannot be true. For instance, (hi Mom if you’re reading) my Mom is a nurse, a Mom, a wife, a daughter, a Christian, and the list goes on. All of these things are different purposes she has and while many may tie into the same thing (such as a Mom and a nurse both need to be nurturing and compassion) there is no one destined path or purpose.

God calls us to many things. Everything we do has a purpose. You may expect some burning bush moment where God reveals your exact path and destination… but I’m 98.9 percent sure that will never happen. Obviously I’m not the one who chooses purpose or the reveal of it to one another and if you get your burning bush moment, let me know.

Instead purpose is something we are to understand. You want to know your purpose? You want to know your path? Gain understanding. Pray about it. Read your Bible. Try. Half of life is trying, making mistakes, and changing your direction. God will stop you from where you’re not supposed to be and direct you back. You know the cliché saying ‘when God closes a door He opens a window’.

It’s true although less metaphorical. God will stop what is not supposed to happen (unless we force it, which happens sometimes) and He will give us guidance. There is a reason the Holy Spirit is an internal force. It’s to lead us through.

It is our job to draw out the ‘deep’ water. Our job to figure out on purpose. Not in that we make our own purpose and whatever you choose to fulfill you will become your purpose, but that we have one given to us and we are supposed to discover it and learn more about it.

God, I pray you would help us learn more about our purpose. Call us forward. Use us as your vessel. I pray as your children we would become stronger in you. Help us to fulfill your will and to make you proud. As I continue to grow and learn more about you and life, may you guide me into your path.

Father I know I have no real meaning or purpose outside of you. Anything I do outside of you serves nothing. It is useless. So I pray God that everything I do would be dedicated to you and everything you are more worthy than would be tossed aside.

In Jesus’ Name,

Amen

God bless you guys!

P.S. This was probably really short and had a lot of errors because I am literally falling asleep trying to write. I also have a massive headache… so I should probably just go to sleep.
